3 Fish Oil – Bad Manufacturing Practices

Why would one want to take omega-3 fish oil, either in liquid or capsule form? There are a lot of people complaining of fishy burps, fishy aftertaste and gastrointestinal upset. Not only that, but a lot complain about the size of the capsule which makes it too hard swallow. To think, you are sometimes required to swallow 6 to 8 softgel capsules daily. It would be tormenting just to think about swallowing all those large capsules. There are feedbacks of taking in toxic contaminants and heavy metals along with the fish oil. These are the downsides of wanting to be healthy through taking supplements.

There are explanations for all the negative feedbacks of omega-3 fish oil. These are what you call bad apples. It is not that there are bad parts of a certain batch but bad manufacturing practices by manufacturers who look for fast easy money. The fishy burps and aftertaste are caused by spoiled or rancid fish oil.

The problem starts in the sea. Large trawlers spend more time at sea while harvesting fish. This makes the fish exposed to air which activates the oxidation process. Next, is the strategic location of the processing plant. If it is too far away from the drop off point of harvested fish, it still needs to be transported which extends the oxidation period. If the trawler and the trucks used in harvesting and transporting the fish has no refrigerating system then it hastens the spoiling of the fish. By the time the fish gets to the processing plant, it may already be half spoiled. Some manufacturers opt to purchase accumulated fish oil from wholesalers which at this state is already in the process of oxidation.

To mask the rancidity, they add flavoring or use enteric coating. The latter ensures that the capsule starts to breaks in the large intestine and not in the stomach, ridding you of fish oil aftertaste or stomach upset. But, researchers say that to maximize the effect of omega-3 fatty acids, the fish oil should start breaking down in the stomach. The problem with this is that you might be doing more harm than good to your system.

When it comes to high levels of toxic substances or heavy metals, this is perhaps due to some producers who do not adhere to the manufacturing practices that separate the omega-3 EFA's from the unwanted substances. They could either not have the budget for purchase the proper equipment or choose not to purchase it since it would mean additional cost.

For those unlucky few who find it too hard to swallow because of the size of softgel capsules, manufacturers have produced capsules 40% smaller than the regular-sized capsules. The level of DHA and EPA though is the same or sometimes even higher than the regular ones. Manufacturers use pharmaceutical-grade fish oil to attain this. However, it is hard to grab a hold of these kinds of fish oil because only a few of them has started manufacturing it for adults. The cost of production is also significantly higher than the regular omega-3 fish oil, so expect the price to double.

Is it okay to take all these vitamins together?

Everyday with breakfast I take all these vitamins. I've been doing it for a long time with no problems...just curious if I'm doing my body any good or not??

500mg of Cinnamon (for sugar metabolism since my family has a long history of diabetes I have a high chance of getting it) - 1 capsule

500mg of Vitamin C (immune health) - 1 pill

50mg of Zinc (immune health) - 1 pill

1000mcg of Biotin (hair, skin, nails) - 1 pill

99mg of Potassium (heart and circulation) - 1 pill

1680mg of Cranberry (since I've had a couple UTIs and kidney infections in the past) - 1 softgel

From the list you have comprised here I not see any harm in taking them and you are taking them within recommended ranges. However, I am assuming you are a healthy individual and is not taking other medications. Zinc, potassium and Cranberry can interact with certain medications.
